However, few law enforcement agencies other than in Japan trained more than a few hours with tonfatofa the side-handle baton, making it less than effective with poorly trained police officers. As a result, as a law-enforcement weapon, the tonfa became awkward and under-used. Thus it has more pragmatic application to Shorin-Ryu martial artists and the Japanese police. Shorin-Ryu martial artists learn to use all surfaces of the tonfa for defense and striking. After this is accomplished a student can apply for kobudo certification from Soke Hausel.
Not quite a rice mill, but same principal. Training also involves using one tonfa and two tonga in self-defense techniques. The more advanced stage of training with tonfa is using it in sparring jiyu kumite against armed opponents with a knife tantobohanbonunchakuetc. The weapon is held by side handles tsuka either in a normal or extended position, as well as in a reverse grip.
It is used for blocking, striking and hooking. Teule 1st dan from France attacks Dave from ChandlerArizona. Dave defends with tonfa. An arastre gold mill at Jerome, Arizona. This mill was not used for any Okinawan weapons. Instead, it was used to extract gold.
But imagine if the Okinawans had this – just think what those chains could have been used for – maybe a manrikigusari or kamagusari.

The tonfa, the classical night stick also referred to as the PR and side-handle baton, has been used by law enforcement agencies around the globe, but few officers really know how to use this baton. In most Okinawa baton training, students use two tonfa unlike law enforcement. Even so, our students also learn to use just one tonfa. A small group of our students who tested for certification meaning they have reached a level of expertise with this weapon that is considered expert have shown they understand kihon basic strikes, blocks and throwsthey demonstrated all three of our Seiyo Shorin-Ryu tonfa kata, demonstrated bunkai applications from the kataused to tonfa as a self-defense weapon against kobydo armed with clubs, poles and knives, and also demonstrated kobhdo sparring defending with a pair of tonfa against attackers wielding a bo 6-foot pole.

This is one of many kobudo weapons that is used at the Arizona Hombu dojo in ChandlerMesa and Gilbert in the east valley of Phoenix. Weapons similar to the tonfa are found in other Asian countries including China, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Keep in mind few things ever develop without the influence of others and there is a tendency by Mankind to build on or modify earlier creations.
But others suggest the weapon was indigenous to Okinawa and there may have been a parallel evolution of weapons in other Asian countries. A similar weapon was apparently created in Thailand known as the Mae Sun Sawk.
Guai is thought to have originated in China prior to BC. With the close relationship between China and Okinawa any connection between these two countries must always be considered. This restriction is said to have favored development of secretive agricultural and fishing tools as weapons of self-defense by Okinawan peasants and possibly by the Okinawa samurai caste known as Kobydo.
In this context, it is thought that tonfa may have been developed from kobkdo wooden handle of a millstone, a common agricultural tool. Also referred to as tong fa or tuifafeudal Okinawans made tonfa from native tree species similar to white oak. Typically, two tonfa were used in vertical and horizontal millstones with projecting knobs inserted into sockets on either side of the stone. At this point, the millstone was driven along a trough to grind grain into flour.
Hausel poses for Hall of Fame induction photo at the. If the tonfa actually originated as millstone handles, they had to be modified to produce modern tonfawhich are now manufactured in quantity.
Most primitive tonfa also lacked a handle pommel tsukagashira. The half-moon and flat tonfa more effectively redistribute energy from a blow of a heavy weapon throughout the flat surface of the weapon.
Hombu dojo in ChandlerMesaGilbert in the East. The weapons of kobudo are thought to have connections with farming and fishing cultures of Okinawa. Some of these kobudo weapons include: George Mumford from Boston, trains with tonfa at the. However, modern martial arts scholars have been unable to verify this hypothesis and some historians now suggest that karate and kobudo was restricted to the Pechin samurai caste on Okinawa, rather than the Heimin commoner.
I suspect there was some influence by Heimin societies, simply because it is often discussed in Okinawan folklore and also these kobudo weapons were tools of trade for the commoner, something a member of the high society of Okinawa Pechin would likely have ignored. The genius of Okinawan kobudo was the development of kobudo kata which became an extension of karate.
Kobudo Tonfa | Hooded Arts
The same strikes and blocks used in kobudo are used in karate with some minor modifications. Thus most kobudo kihon basics mimic karate kobudk.
The kobudo traditions were shaped by indigenous Okinawan techniques that were modified tonfw imported methods principally from China. When the handle is grasped, the shaft protects the forearm and hand while the knob tsukagashira and tsuka protects the thumb. In offense, one can swing the shaft to strike. Large amounts of energy can be imparted to the shaft by twirling the tonfa by the handle. The tonfa can also be wielded in such a way as to use the knob as a striking implement similar to a hammer.
One can also thrust either end of the shaft ushiro atama or zen atama to strike an attacker. Tonfa are traditionally wielded in pairs, one in each hand. This is unlike law enforcement agencies that typically use one nightstick. The effectiveness of the tonfa as a law enforcement tool was seen in its use worldwide.
The size of tonfa is determined similar to sai and should extend about one inch beyond the elbow for combat: The shaft is typically 20 to 24 inches in length. The weight of the weapon is important.
The weapon should not so light that you lose power and focus, and should not be too heavy that it cannot kobudoo maneuvered with speed. Three traditional grips 1 natural honte mochi2 reverse gyakute mochiand 3 special grip tokushu mochi are used.

I thought the plot was interesting. Four students attend a very prestigious and challenging music school to follow their dreams. I enjoyed seeing through those four pairs of eyes about how it’s like to attend a school for it’s music and other programs drama, art, etc. You can really learn something from these four characters: And who has feelings for Emme but doesn’t know what to do about it.
So like I said, Take a Bow was a fun and fast read. I did enjoy it but I found myself annoyed more than eulbwrg few times. What I found annoying was Emme. She’s the sweet and shy girl who everyone likes but I found her kinda annoying. Not only is her personality sweet and shy it’s also quite dense. She doesn’t really see how her “best friend” Sophie really uses and abuses her.
Then when she finds out who the real Sophie is she claims to herself she knew that Sophie changed but made excuses for her. I didn’t really believe that. It took almost until the end of the book for Emme to finally realize Sophie isn’t her best friend anymore just a jealous girl. Not only is Takr dense in one relationship but in two. She doesn’t realize until later that Ethan is her real best friend and then later realizes he’s in love with her.
Am I the only one who saw that Emme also kinda used and abuses Ethan? She doesn’t want to be front stage so she and the guys in their band make Ethan front man but she’s harsh to him when he messes up in the band. Still I do admit she was right in doing the Mount Emme thing since Ethan did deserve a tongue lashing but she does insult too.
She also helps Sophie cheat by playing Ethan’s song so Sophie has an edge. I was mad that Ethan didn’t yell at her for that. I do like Emme as a character but I found that she was to dense for me to really like her. I think she was also too high and mighty especially concerning Ethan. I give this book three stars.
One eulbberg found this helpful. Let me just preface this by saying that I eliizabeth did leizabeth the book. The story unfolds with four perspective voices.
There’s Sophie, Carter, Ethan and Emme. Each chapter is from a different perspective character which still elizaveth the plot along in a linear bw. I liked way the story was told. The voice was always fresh and new because it would be four chapters until we came back to that character’s chapter again.
And I liked that I could see the story through not just one pair of eyes. It was very well crafted. I do have to say though, that starting out, the only character Elziabeth really liked was Ethan. I couldn’t stand Sophie.
She’s so completely absorbed in her own talent and importance. She sees eizabeth world as elizaebth stage and all the little people help her reach her goals. She has drawn out a plan to become famous, which also includes those around her. She uses every one she knows to her own end like she has the right to because she deserves it. An elizabeyh is her relationship with Emme. She is Emme’s best friend, but I can’t say the feeling is mutual.
Take a Bow by Elizabeth Eulberg
Emme is a songwriter and she needs Emme to be a part of the plan so Emme will write songs for her to sing. No one can write songs like Emme can or make Sophie sound as dynamic as Emme does with her music. Emme doesn’t sing her own songs because Sophie has convinced her that she doesn’t sing very well. As it turns out, Emme does have a decent voice, but then she becomes competition.
Even Sophie’s choice in boyfriends is calculated. She is dating Carter who is a child star and currently starring in a soap opera. She like dating Carter because they go out often to premiers and such and there are lots of photo ops to get her face out there and her name. Carter is just one of the stepping stones that will help Sophie achieve her dream of fame bod success. I found nothing at all endearing about her, but the character was very elizbaeth written.
Take a Bow
Carter is a bit more sympathetic. He is going through an identity crisis realizing that he really doesn’t enjoy acting.
It is unfortunate because no one will allow him the opportunity to explore any other career path other than acting. In any of the school productions, he is always told he is going to be doing a scene from a play. Even when he tried to suggest another talent to showcase, he was basically shut down. He feels trapped by a future he no longer wants and has no idea how to extricate himself from the situation he has found himself in. He finds that he is not just acting on the set, but he’s acting through life.
Playing the perfect boyfriend, playing the perfect student, playing the perfect son.

Lone Star College is conducting information sessions for businesses interested in becoming a vendor and doing business. John Steinbeck’s short story “The Chrysanthemums” is about a steinebck, strong woman named Elisa Allen who feels frustrated with her present life.
Her frustration stems from not having a child and from her husband’s failure to admire her romantically as a woman.
The only outlet for her frustration is her flower garden where she cultivates beautiful chrysanthemums. Steinbeck uses chrysanthemums as symbols of the inner-self of Elisa and of every woman.
First, the chrysanthemums symbolize Elisa’s children. She tends her garden and handles the chrysanthemums with love and care, just as she would handle her own children. Elisa is very protective of her flowers and places a wire fence around them; she makes sure “[n]o aphids, no sowbugs or snails or cutworms” are there.
These pests represent natural harm to the flowers, and, just as any good mother, she removes them before they can harm her children. The chrysanthemums are symbolic of her children, and she is very proud of them.
Steimbeck Elisa’s husband compliments her on her flowers, she is proud, and “on her face there [is] a little smugness” She is steingeck and pleased by her ability to nurture these beautiful flowers. Elisa’s pride in her ability to grow such beautiful flowers reinforces the fact that the flowers are a replacement for her children.
In the second part of the story, the chrysanthemums come to symbolize Elisa’s femininity and sexuality. The portrait of Elisa caring for the flowers as though they steinbec, her children is clearly a feminine image, but her masculine image is also observed in her “hard-swept and hard-polished” home This image is carried over into her relationship with her husband.
Elisa feels that Henry doesn’t recognize or appreciate her femininity, and this steinbeci causes her to be antagonistic towards him. There is an undercurrent of resentment towards her husband.
Henry fails to see his short-comings, but Elisa fails to point them out to him. There is tseinbeck distinct lack of harmony between them, which causes Elisa to become discontented with Henry. On observing her prize flowers, all Henry can say is, “I wish you’d work out in the orchard and raise some apples that big” Henry’s inability to understand Elisa’s needs leaves her vulnerable in her encounter with the tinker.
The meeting with the tinker renews Elisa’s feelings of femininity and sexuality as a woman. Her resistance to his mundane matters disappears after the tinker romantically describes the chrysanthemums as a “quick puff of colored smoke” By admiring the chrysanthemums, he figuratively admires her.
The chrysanthemums symbolize her sexuality, and she “[tears] off the battered hat and [shakes] out her dark pretty hair” With a few well-placed words from eteinbeck tinker, her masculine image has been replaced with a feminine one.
Symbolism in “The Chrysanthemums”
The tinker is a catalyst in Elisa’s life. By giving him the red flower pot with the chrysanthemums, she gives him the symbol of chrysantheemum inner-self. She begins to feel hope for herself and her marriage as the tinker leaves.
She sees a “bright direction” and a new beginning for her marriage.
The encounter with the tinker gives Elisa hope and causes her to prepare for a more fulfilling life. After the tinker leaves, Elisa bathes, scrubbing herself “with a little block of pumice, legs and thighs, loins and chest and arms, until her skin was scratched and red” Elisa sheds her old self by scrubbing and brings new life and change. She prepares for her night out with her husband. She dresses, lingering in front of the mirror and admires her body, her femininity.
She puts on sheer stockings and a beautiful dress and leisurely applies her make-up. She is looking forward to her evening with her husband. She hopes Henry will recognize her needs as a woman and provide her with the romance and excitement for which she longs.
However, this hope is quickly dashed. Henry’s best compliment on her appearance after she has changed is: This unflattering remark on her appearance chrysanthfmum do much for Elisa’s ego as a woman.
Her hope is finally crushed when she steinbeco the flowers on the road. She feels devastated by the tinker’s thoughtless rejection of her very soul.
He, like her husband, has failed to appreciate the very qualities that make her unique as a woman. This one symbolic act has left her with no hope. She realizes that her life is not going to change.
Her femininity and sexuality are never going to be fully appreciated nor understood by Henry. She must learn to be content with an unexciting husband and her less-than-romantic marriage. Her devastation at this realization is complete and leaves her “crying weakly-like an old woman” Thus, the chrysanthemums symbolize Elisa’s role as a woman. First they symbolize her children; later they represent her femininity and sexuality.
Elisa feels frustrated with her life because children and romance are missing in her marriage with Henry. Further, her husband fails to appreciate her womanly qualities and her emotional needs. The encounter with the tinker reawakens her sexuality and brings hope to Elisa for steinbec more exciting and romantic marriage, but her realization that her life is not going to change is crystallized when she sees the flowers thrown on cyrysanthemum road. It devastates her completely to have to settle for such an unfulfilling life.

To try it download the build from our confluence pageor get a patch-update right in the IDE in case you are using previous EAP build.
CLion EAP: Remote GDB debug | CLion Blog
This build brings you one of the most voted feature — remote debug. On Windows remote debug is supported from version Finally, simply run the executable on a filetgpe system under gdbserver you can use built-in terminal to access the remote host. The execution will stop on a breakpoints set from the IDE. Get the binutils-gdb sources from the Git repositoryswitch branch to gdb Besides note, that in case you have sources with symlinks on your host, to make remote debug work open project in CLion using the canonical paths CPP Please, check the new functionality in case you are interested in remote debug, and provide the feedback to us in the comment section below or in our tracker.
Note, that we already have some plans about UI improvements: Our users tiletype us to define a way to automatically detect that CLion is used to run the CMake command on the project. Full list of release notes are available by the link.
fileyype Congratulations on getting remote debug in there! Pretty sad start so far. Cannot configure GDB defaults: And more alarming is that the GDB tab in the Debugger tab is empty.
No path mappings either. This problem may revolve around library compatibility. I get the same error when running a local debug session:. Process finished with exit code 0 Cannot configure GDB defaults: And again, empty GDB tab. We are currently working on the problem. Please, use system GDB until we fix this https: Type “show copying” and filtype warranty” for details.
Run & Debug Configurations – Features | CLion
For bug reporting instructions, please see: These memory errors turned out to be user error. I was loading the wrong symbols. Once I loaded the correct symbols, debugging worked nicely. For OS X folks: I updated Homebrew for the 7. PR is at https: OS X Homebrew users can just do brew gdh gdb to get the latest. Or it will not work for sure? No, does not work properly. But remote gdb log shows it has connected and set breakpoints.
However it does not stop on any breakpoint and I have no control over remote target.
Currently I receive an error in Clion: Obviously, the first thing I want to debug on embedded target is mnaual code that will do system initialization, configure interrupts, stack etc. Could you please describe this case in tracker in details?
Looks like we are missing some real cases from our users that can help us make decisions about how remote debug should be supported in CLion. I just spent some hours testing clion. It merely vomits a ton of errors.
We are used to get crap and PR blabla, based on market studies from the usa. From Jetbrains I expected better and more honest. Anyway we do plan to add C-project template: Please, share your ideas here.
But the statement ciletype CLion is useless for C is not quite true. I have successfully worked on several open source C projects. There are some minor glitches with syntax highlighting and the parser reports some false mankal, but generally it works. When you create a new project with Manuao, just rename the main.
Of course you also have to replace the content of the main. But fioetype you are a C programmer you should know how to do that. See here for a complete list: It would be quite helpful if CLion could recognize these variables, and also if I could inspect the value of theses variables. Do you know if there is an open issue for that already?
Currently, completion works for CMake variable only, others like these exported are not yet supported. This work should be done within this ticket: Gbd was released just in time! One question, is there a way to tie the build configuration to the remote debug configuration? As it is now I have to select the build configuration to compile, then switch to the remote gdb configuration to debug. I am trying to debug remotely an arm cortex-m0 stm32f0. Hi, configuring settings in.
However, I have different HW target setups, and cramming them all in. Would it be possible to add a field in the GUI to pass extra arguments to gdb? Feel free to submit a feature request — https: Hi, I am using a.
One of the monitor commands makes gdb output a custom string.
I have not found a way to make gdb to not output this. Is it possible to somehow make CLion ignore this output and continue? Could you please filetyp an issue here https: Debugger connected to kanual Please, check the configuration settings: You have to provide path mappings Linux macOS as well in that case.
Was it left out intentionally? Configuration settings config local gdb and target remote args config the main file as symbol file config path mapping: Thank you very much. I just create a issue and attach the screenshot of the configuration. Why manhal you need the remote debug in that case? ,anual can use attach to local process functionality I suppose. To be able to attach to local processes with gdb on Ubuntu You can read more about that here: This information is already present in our webhelp: I am able to debug using terminal with these commands: Now when I try the remote debug using CLion Default Bundled — Target: Although it seems the connection from the GDB server and manusl is working it seems I — am missing something because the debugger tools step in, step over, continue, etc.
I suspect the way I am using to pass in the program argument —myarg in this line: I am looking forward to be able to debug using this awesome IDE rather than using the terminal. I am close but got stucked here.
I really appreciate some help! You need to also provide a file with debug symbols. It can be simply an executable built with debug and copied to your Fedora host. I used gmake -d and copied the executable file to the Fedora host and configured the Symbol file.
Now in the server I see: Got EOF Remote manula has terminated connection. GDBserver will reopen the connection. I just downloaded the files from the server but I could not actually build the program locally FedoraI can only build and gxb in the server Red hat.
